Musical Hugs is playing the “Last Word / First Word” game

Last Word, First Word!
Last Tuesday I decided to try something different for the live broadcast of my Musical Hugs show, which goes out on Tuesdays 7-9pm. I put a constraint on the tracks selected so that the last word of each track title would dictate the first word of the subsequent track title. This took me on an exciting journey into the unknown, discovering many new artists across a myriad of genres, which is a big part of what I try to do in each Musical Hugs show. One challenge along this journey is that I wanted to retain the regular features of a field recording and two songs in Catalan.
This would mean that I would have to choose each track carefully in order to steer the titles to a point where the journey would pass through the 3 pre-ordained track titles. To make life easier I picked two Catalan songs with non-Catalan titles (“4-3-3” and “Rock & Roll”). The field recording was a rendition of Caledonia sung by Hannah Bardell MP and Greg McCarra in 2015. One-word titles such as “Caledonia” in this “Last Word / First Word” game do not pose a huge problem – in this case the preceding song (“New Caledonia”) had last word Caledonia and the subsequent song (“Caledonia Mission”) started with Caledonia.

A big thank you to the listeners who engaged with the show live enjoying the music and trying to predict which tracks might be coming up after each point. The level of engagement was great fun and made me realise we could have even more fun if we opened up the track selection to the listeners and removed the constraints of steering our journey through the 3 pre-selected tracks of the field recording and Catalan songs. Who knows where such a show would take us! It would be quite a technical challenge and adrenalin rush to host such a show, but the prospect of such a participatory form of live broadcast is really exciting. So we are going to do this next Tuesday (7-9pm, 25 Jan 2022) and see where it takes us.
