Big Noise – “A glorious and joyful thing”
Written by WeegieFifer on 25 July 2021
There are four Big Noise Orchestras for Kids in Scotland, all running under the auspices of Sistema Scotland. Sistema began in Venezuela setting up community-based projects to let kids learn an instrument and play together in an orchestra. It has since expanded to many countries. It’s motto “Music for Social Change.”
Big Noise Govanhill
In this week’s Daytime Show we talk to Jane Mallinson a long time volunteer at Big Noise Govanhill. This July, during the school holidays, Govanhill kids are turning up for a morning of playing music together all under socially distant Covid precautions. Jane tells us what happens in that morning’s session. She talks about the changes she sees happening and the benefit for the kids but also for herself as a volunteer. Then you’ll hear Govanhill Big Noise playing at a TEDx Glasgow meeting.
Sistema Scotland 10th Birthday
It was Sistema’s 10th Birthday in Scotland and a celebration was held over in Holyrood. There was music provided by the kids. And the MSPs held a celebratory debate. We’ve got some extracts from that featuring Bruce Crawford, then MSP for Stirling where the first Big Noise was set up in the Raploch estate, and Jenny Marra, who talks about the project in Dundee. Our blog title is a quote from her speech.
As well as spreading in Scotland, some of our Scottish Big Noise kids have travelled to Venezuela to play there. And others of them have made a film about the various ages that Big Noise caters for, about their own experience at Big Noise and the effect it has had on them.
